Tungsten in Our Own Backyard
What do you know, Australia has a stake in tungsten!
Australia holds around 13% of the world’s known tungsten resources, giving it a solid position in the global market. However, its production remains relatively small, contributing only about 1% of global supply.
Currently, the country’s main producer is EQ Resources, which operates the Mt Carbine mine in Far North Queensland. Another significant source is the Dolphin Mine in Tasmania. Beyond these key operations, tungsten deposits are scattered across the nation, highlighting Australia’s potential for further development in this sector.
Because tungsten is classed as a critical mineral, there is growing attention on expanding local production. In Far North Queensland, three new tungsten projects—including the revitalisation of a former abandoned mine—are under active consideration.
Although Australia is not a major global producer, it is a significant consumer of tungsten. This is largely due to the country’s strong mining, manufacturing and construction industries, which rely heavily on tungsten’s durability and resistance to wear.
