 Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy

Alexander Van Nunen

STEM Engagement Educator, Mackay Regional Hub

As the QMEA Regional STEM Engagement Educator for Mackay, Isaac, and the Whitsundays, I connect schools with the mining, minerals, and energy sector to inspire the next generation of skilled workers.

In partnership with industry, I deliver hands-on, curriculum-aligned STEM programs that highlight real-world applications, and design and coordinate workshops, excursions, and events showcasing local career pathways.

I support primary and secondary teachers to embed authentic STEM learning that builds key industry skills such as problem-solving, digital literacy, teamwork, and innovation, while facilitating meaningful engagement between students and industry professionals to strengthen career awareness and readiness.

With a background in STEM education and digital pedagogy, I am passionate about linking students to opportunities in the resources sector and supporting industry in building a skilled, motivated, future workforce.

Russell Resource Group

Damien Russell

Founder and Principal Consultant

I have over 20 years of experience across the mining, energy, and resources sector, working on mine sites and ports in Australia and internationally. My focus spans laboratory and sampling services, inspection, operational improvement, workforce capability, and project delivery.

I work hands-on at the operational level alongside site teams, not just above them.

In 2026, I transitioned Coalfield Consulting to Russell Resource Group. While the name changed, the approach remains the same. We are now based at 65 Crichtons Road, Mackay, co-located with the Resources Centre of Excellence, where I work within a collaborative industry and government network.

Alongside consulting, I represent DSI Dust Solutions, delivering dust suppression and wind fence technologies, and Finelbe Inspections, supporting improved sampling and laboratory practices globally.

Outside of work, I am an avid cricketer and President of Pinnacle Cricket Club in the Mackay Cricket Association, contributing to both senior and junior cricket and staying actively involved in the local community.

If you have an operational challenge that warrants a direct conversation, feel free to make contact.
