Queensland Resources & Innovation Expo

The purpose of the Queensland Resources & Innovation Expo is to be the premier platform for showcasing cutting-edge technologies, fostering industry collaboration, and driving sustainable advancements in the resources sector. With the backing of principal sponsor Queensland Resources Council (QRC) and major sponsors Mackay Regional Council and Local Buying Foundation, this event will bring together industry leaders, technology innovators, policymakers, investors and anyone interested to explore solutions that enhance efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility.

VIP Networking Evening

The VIP network evening at the Queensland Resources & Innovation Expo was an invite-only networking event held on July 10, 2025, to provide attendees with opportunities to connect and collaborate with industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders.

This exclusive event was part of the launch of the Expo and served as an important opportunity for key individuals in the resources and innovation sector to engage and build relationships within the industry.

Panel Sessions Wrap Up

Panel Session 1

Resource Innovation: Advancing Coal, Critical Minerals & Operations

This session focused on advancing technology in coal, critical minerals, and operations.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Technology & Automation: Nautitech highlighted its 25 years of experience in underground electronics and software and its work connecting 2,500 machines globally. Emesent showcased its LIDAR scanning technology (Hovermap) which automates data capture in dangerous environments, removing people from harm's way.

  • Economic & Industry Outlook: Darren Moor from the Queensland Government noted the resources sector is valued at $81 billion, with coal contributing $49 billion. The future of coal is considered essential, particularly for low-carbon steel making.

  • Fostering Collaboration: The importance of collaboration was a central theme, with facilities like the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct (AARP) helping to lower entry barriers for start-ups. It was noted that 95% of the world's automated haul trucks are in WA, suggesting an opportunity for growth in Queensland. The government's role is seen as crucial in encouraging and facilitating the use of these central facilities.

  • Challenges in AI Adoption: While AI is a focus, it was described as an "over-used buzzword." For effective implementation, it requires continuous data capture and reliable network infrastructure. Panellists noted that cloud-based networks can suffer from poor latency, creating a need for local processing solutions like "Edge AI."

  • Overcoming Barriers to Innovation: A significant barrier identified is the slow pace of certification and approvals for new technologies. The discussion called for more certification bodies and the need to harmonize global standards to accelerate the pace of technology. A key cultural barrier noted is the mindset of, "We have been doing this for Ages."

  • The Role of Universities: Universities were identified as being "ripe for commercialising ideas" and able to move quickly when external demand is present. It was suggested that universities need to move past institutional hurdles, such as prioritizing academic publishing over commercialization, to better contribute to the innovation ecosystem.

Panel Session 2

Sustainable Resources: Enduring Impact & ESG Innovation

This session explored the evolving landscape of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria in the resources sector.ther resources.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Integrating ESG: A consensus emerged that ESG cannot be a "bolt-on" feature; it must be built into operational and strategic plans from the very beginning. Reverse-engineering ESG into a project is considered "way too late." Mine rehabilitation, for example, should be planned at the start of a mine's life to create future opportunities.

  • Community Engagement: The panel stressed the importance of authentic community engagement, advocating for a "Caring for Country" protocol that includes Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. Co-designing ESG processes with the community is crucial for building trust and avoiding project delays and reputational damage.

  • Decarbonisation & Due Diligence: Talisman discussed its work in providing drilling decarbonisation solutions, methane management, and conducting ESG due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and insurance providers.

  • The "Magic Wand" for Change: When asked for one thing to accelerate positive change, suggestions included:

    • Creating a central knowledge hub for land and community data to support consent and future planning.

    • Investing in education and creating community knowledge hubs.

    • Incorporating ESG aspects into every business plan.

Session 3

Mine Pitch: Calling Queensland innovators; start-ups and scale-ups

This session provided a platform for start-ups and scale-ups to present innovative solutions.

Pitches Presented:

  • HNA Group: Presented RS23-compliant custom tooling, such as burst sleeving, designed to prevent high-pressure fluid injection injuries during maintenance.

  • Priori Analytica: Showcased a prototype for a site-based, real-time vibration analysis solution using explainable AI to predict maintenance needs in rotating plants.

  • Mackay Safety: Offered a software solution to simplify and automate safety compliance, streamlining processes like timesheets and documentation for SMEs.

  • MyNu Energy: Pitched the repurposing of second-life EV batteries for mobile and containerised energy storage solutions, matched with solar, to reduce diesel power usage in remote applications.

  • Fly High Rope Access: Presented the use of rope access and web decking to improve safety and set new standards for performing work at heights, as an alternative to traditional scaffolding.

  • Kaeser Compressors: This entry appeared to be a framework for effective pitching rather than a specific product pitch.
